About Me

Meet Amy Brown

The teacher behind Zoo Kids Reading

Hi, I’m Amy Brown. I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember. I started helping other kids learn to read when I was in third grade, and that passion has stayed with me ever since.

I’m a certified reading specialist and elementary teacher with more than 18 years of experience helping students become confident, successful readers.

Why I Started Zoo Kids Reading

I started Zoo Kids Reading because too many children weren’t

being taught in a way that worked for them.

I use a research-based approach grounded in the science of reading,

with a strong focus on phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension.

I believe every child can learn to read,

and I’ve made it my mission to make that happen.

Teaching Online Around the World

For the past nine years, I’ve taught thousands of online classes to students around the world. Many continue learning with me for years—not because they’re falling behind, but because their parents want to keep building their love of reading. We form strong relationships, and that trust helps students feel safe, supported, and confident.

It also allows me to make each lesson interactive, personal, and focused on what works for each learner.

How I Teach

I use movement, play dough, props, and decodable books to make learning fun and effective. I keep early readers engaged by writing my own decodable stories, including mysteries, fiction, and nonfiction

to match the phonics skills we are working on. Students get to choose what they read which helps them stay interested and take ownership of their learning.

For more advanced students, I write informational texts, stories, and chapter books on topics they enjoy which helps students continue growing as readers with content that is meaningful and interesting. When needed, we also work on advanced phonics skills using real texts that support those lessons.

Real Results

I’ve worked with students from many different backgrounds,

including those in war zones and high-stress environments. I’ve seen students go from frustration and tears to reading with confidence and joy.

One of my students, Keegan, has autism and ADHD.

He started with just a few letter sounds. After working through the books I wrote and building his skills step by step, he earned an academic excellence trophy.

A Bit About Me

When I’m not teaching or reading, I’m spending time with my dog Zoey. She came from a tough start but has become a happy part of our family.

Her story reminds me of my students.

With the right support, every child can thrive.

Ready to Begin?

If your child is struggling or just getting started, I’d love to help.

I’m here to take them from reading tears to reading cheers!
